The skills engine that became EY Spotmentor

SpotMentor Technologies · SkillTech

The business said

  • “Buy more course licenses for everyone”
  • “Run the annual training-needs survey again”
  • “Stand up yet another LMS”
  • “Hire trainers for every new technology”
  • “Tell each employee which skill to learn next, from live job-market data”
Enterprise skilling was not a content problem. It was a matching problem: which skill, for which person, against the jobs the market is creating next.

An AI skills intelligence platform, built from zero to acquisition

This file is different: the product was ours. In 2016, before Ascendra existed, our founder and three IIT Kharagpur batchmates started SpotMentor Technologies in Gurgaon. Every enterprise they met said versions of the same thing: our people's skills are going stale, the annual training survey is outdated before it is compiled, the course library sits unwatched. Underneath all of it was one atomic problem: nobody could say which skill, for which person, against the jobs the market was about to create.

SpotMentor attacked that problem with data instead of surveys. The platform read live job-market signals to keep a skills taxonomy that moved with the market, mapped every role and every person against it to expose the real gap, and then prescribed a personalized learning path for each employee, assembled from the best content available rather than one licensed library. Virtual learning academies packaged the same engine for the domains enterprises cared most about, from Sales, Finance, and Supply Chain to AI, Big Data and Analytics, and Cybersecurity, with AI-powered matching of people to jobs feeding career and succession planning.

It sold where the pain was largest: large enterprises, governments, and industry bodies trying to upskill and reskill at a scale no classroom programme could reach. The market moved exactly the way the product bet it would; by EY's own estimate, 40 to 65 percent of jobs across sectors would require new skills within the following three years.

In November 2020 the verdict arrived from outside: EY India acquired SpotMentor Technologies to power the digital learning arm of its consulting practice. The platform lives on as EY Spotmentor, selling skills-gap analysis and virtual learning academies to EY clients. It is the spine every Ascendra case file follows, proven end to end: many asks in, one atomic problem out, one build, and this time the verdict was an acquisition.

  • Acquired by EY, the verdict
  • 2016 to 2020, built and sold
  • 4 IIT KGP engineers, founding team
